Creepy, Crawly, Crunchy and Cool

We aren’t going to eat any real insects but we are going to make some funny looking dishes to  make our family laugh at dinner time. We also are going to swing by the Compost Cafe from our story and cook up something extra yummy and slimy.

First course is some yummy buggy vegetable treats. Get out some favorite vegetables and show us how many friends you can make. We sliced up some black olives to build some spiders. We also used tiny green capers and small slices of celery to make another crawly friend. We’d have to slice up a lot of celery to make a millipede. You can make big and small veggie or fruit treats. How many different insects and arthropods can you create?

For our second dish we pretended to be chefs at The Compost Cafe where all the meals are  smushed up and slimy. We made homemade guacamole fit the order.

For the guacamole you will need six avocados, one cup of diced tomatoes, one diced yellow or red onion, one small can of mild green chilies, a handful of diced fresh cilantro and one squeezed lime. Now for the fun part, smush it all together! You can use a food processor but we prefer to smush up the avocados with a fork to leave the avocado a little chunky. You can add a sprinkle of cumin if you want a little extra kick. Be careful not to overdo that sprinkle so it’s not too spicy.

Just for fun we had a side dish of squid ink couscous which doesn’t particularly go with avocado. But we wanted to create the look of a dish that looked slimy, buggy and super funny to go with our story! It tasted yummy!!  Think of how you can make a fun and tasty Compost Cafe dish. Don’t dump any on your head like Saxby and his pals!
